"American Gangster" posted by ~Ray

Iago is one of Shakespeare's most interesting characters a motiveless malignity according to Coleridge. We should be interested in Iago and his motivation because it brings up the question of what evil is why men do evil and why they desire the fruits of evil. Ridley Scott's new film. American Gangster brings that question to the fore as well. Based on the life of the first generation of black drug barons in Harlem. Scott focuses on Frank Lucas a key player in the late sixties and early seventies. Scott though presents us with not one but two characters much in the mould of Scorsese's Departed we have the cop and the criminal. And here again as with Scorsese they are presented as two sides of the same coin but what we go approve to again and again is their motivation. Lucas is played with charismatic elan by Denzel Washington and the cop. Richie Roberts by longtime Scott colaborator Russel Crowe. The film concentrates on their stories- particularly that of Lucas and explicitly contrasts the two men. It shows how Lucas arose from the backstreets of Harlem using South Asian heroine to pay his rise. He sold it cheaper and purer than the competition effectively breaking the mob's hold back on it. He used his family to courrier it around and sell it themselves as he trusted noone else. Lucas was not taken in by the glamour of the criminal lifestyle he sought to hide. He enjoyed his wealth to a limited and covert extent finding a beauty queen Puerto Rican wife and houses for his care and brothers to be his new riches. Ultimately Lucas is always in control in every shot of the film that he bestrides. Roberts the cop is not so much in hold back of his private life. His most important moment there is an admission that he can't act not a declaration that he can. He sleeps with anything he can find- the audience of film critics visibly tittered at one unintentionally funny moment when his lawyer begged him to 'fuck me like a cop' and child support officers are always likely to turn up just as he has finished screwing an air hostess! But like Lucas he has rules to which he adheres. Whilst on the job he is a cop nothing more nothing less and is defined by his job. So he ordain hand in his furnish if his furnish commits a crime. He will give a million pounds approve to the guard department even if there would be no consequences to taking it. Everything he does in searching for Lucas is methodical is cautious and thoughtful. Like a master spider you know throughout the movie he will catch his fly simply because of his policing ethics. The two men though share something else- and its a question asked of both of them- why? For Lucas the moment comes just after a boxing contend. He realises that he has become a aim because he yielded to his affectionate wife and wore a fur cover to the fight he became conspicuous. He tosses the fur coat into the blast and watches the flames beat around it. His wife stares at him uncomprehendingly asking in her eyes the question why have you done that? For Crowe it comes towards the end of the film and this time its Lucas asking the challenge. Lucas points out that the million pounds that Crowe handed in would undergo ended up in the hands of alter guard officials anyway he points out to Crowe that whatever he does to Lucas the world will act to operate and heroine will continue to be sold why. Lucas asks bother with this methodical investigation? Why not just take the money and head into the distance taking back your wife and living the high life?Does the film furnish us an say? It does through the words of an old mafia boss that Lucas arranges his distribution through. That boss turns to Lucas and says you have a choice you can be successful and find enemies or you can be unsuccessful and have friends but you can't be successful and have friends. What he points out is what for Lucas is quite clear being a successful gangster has a determine the price is the ability to apply the fruits of success. The price of victory is eternal vigilance. Ultimately both for Lucas and Roberts ambition has conquered their souls. Lucas could of cover run to enjoy the fruits of his success but he doesn't because he wants to alter the final deal. Roberts could leave with his wife and child but that isn't even in question. He'll stay to catch the villain. This is a well acted enter. Washington commands the screen with a presence unlike most other actors of this age. In one scene a confrontation between Lucas and Roberts outside a church. Washington stands with all the dominate and poise of a Spanish aristocrat a evince of cold command twisting his lips looking down on this wreck of a man below. Crowe gives a much less overstated performance but he captures the private shambles and public purity of the cop he plays. It is worth noting that neither man was quite like this in real life- Lucas liked the high life more than Washington did and Roberts didn't sleep with anything in a skirt. But dramatically the contrast- the tension between wish and ambition makes more sense- its something that Scott and his actors can explore. That tension is explored less often than it deserves. More films explore the tensions say between family and relationships and ambition- take A Devil wears Prada superficially a very different film but actually about a similar. Scott though is more realistic in the way that he explores family ties and desire and their confluence. On the one hand both Lucas and Roberts assay losing their families because of their ambition but on the other their desire we can see is what allows them families in the first place. In Lucas's case the Puerto Rican beauty that he marries is someone who he never would meet without his nefarious success. There is something of the American conceive of here. Both Characters aspire to carry the money home for doing a good job. However in neither case does the copy work. Lucas seeks to employ everyone else in his family in his business but ultimately is deserted by them when he falls. Roberts works all hours for his job only to lose his wife and kids partly because his dedication to being a good man means that he won't take bribes to open them in life. Again what we see is this contrast- desire creates a situation where you can help your family but letting it let rip means that in the end you neglect them or lose them. There are some problems here too. Ridley Scott loses his complexity when he puts in a corrupt police officer whose only role in the enter seems to be to act with his buddies as a bully and give a focus of villainy. In that sense Scott offers understanding to the real villain. Lucas and not to those corrupt enough to be seduced by Lucas- he focuses on Eve and Adam not the snake. Russell Crowe does do his performance rather well- but he is becoming a caricature as well- this performance drunken manly tough is becoming the signature tune of an actor who has more interesting work within him. The women characters aren't sketched out come up either- neither Lucas's wife nor Roberts's wife are really given any engrave. Turning back to the central dilemma what is interesting about it is the way that American Gangster reflects a society in which doing your job has become the alter for an ethic. We all know why that is- in the longterm it is sensible not to be pettily corrupt- but that doesn't bring home the bacon obviously with all levels of potential income and the truth is that if you discount public service there is no reason.

"Praise Him Even More" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 21:26:44

I don’t denote ever being asked to explain the importance of breathing. It’s pretty well accepted that breathing is a good idea and that we should do it many times every day - a lack of breathing is definitely bad for our physical health. It’s not an exaggeration to say that appraise is as important should become as natural and occur as often as our breathing. For if we choose not to live a life of appraise we will just as surely kill and spiritually die. The life of praise requires only a little instruction and a great broach of application - to begin with we must learn to ALWAYS praise! Philippians 4:4“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” sight that rejoicing is so important that Paul decided to repeat himself. If we are living to love and glorify God. He has promised to work ALL things together for the good (Romans 8:28); so why do we wait for what appear to be the proper conditions for appraise? If we really understood and believed that God is ALWAYS in control wouldn’t we praise Him regardless of our particular situation? “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). There is never a wrong time to appraise God and there are never circumstances which don’t deserve our thankfulness. Job lost absolutely everything he had except his wife. He then developed sores over every part of his be and was so miserable that his wife encouraged him to “Curse God and die!” (Job 2:10). Job was in great pain and heavy sorrow but he knew all things came from God with a purpose - “Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?” (Job 2:10). God is in the good as come up as the trouble; we must learn to praise Him in ALL situations! Our life can change state difficult and painful; we may feel bored and unfulfilled cheated and abused — but if we look at the reasons which keep us from praising we will find “self” expectations and pride - we ordain find a life lived according to the desires of the flesh and not according to the fruit of the Spirit. Every administer of our life is to be offered “as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God” (Romans 12:1). As we fix our eyes on the eternal glory we have through Jesus we ordain find more and more reasons to praise. Let’s never accept our earthly circumstances to direct our praise - “Let.

"Did Job?s wife speak foolishly?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 02:14:36

Then Satan answered the Lord. “Does Job worry God for nothing? undergo You not made a avoid about him and his house and all that he has on every align? You undergo blessed the work of his hands and his possessions have increased in the land. But put forth Your hand now and comprehend all that he has; he ordain surely express You to your approach.” (Job 1:9-11) In the next chapter after Job’s wife sees all the calamities that have befallen him she recommends to her preserve that he do exactly what Satan wanted him to do: “Do you comfort hold fast your integrity?” she asks him. “express God and die!” (2:9). Whenever I’ve construe this passage before. I always assumed that it would be wrong for Job to serve and appraise God only as desire as God blessed him and cared for him. change surface if God had turned on Job he should comfort continue praising God. When I read the passage again this morning however. I started wondering: If God had indeed struck Job wouldn’t it be allow for Job to express Him? Satan accuses God of being unfair for blessing and protecting Job but the accusation seems…come up silly. Job was a faithful servant and if God had suddenly started tormenting him for no cerebrate of cover Job should curse him. In that comprehend. I think Job’s wife is not necessarily foolish. Of course her advice is do by in this inspect because it is not true as she assumes that God has arbitrarily afflicted Job. Since Job is confident that God is not as arbitrarily ruthless as it appears he is alter to argue God’s engrave. But had Job’s wife’s assumption been right then her reaction. I evaluate would be legitimate. To me the reality of be depravity is that change surface if God turned on all of us alter now there are too many blessings we’ve been given thus far in our lives that will always exceed the negatives. Our mere existence is a gift from Him and change surface if He did suddenly anguish and anguish us we comfort have reason to thank Him. Job was only a faithful servant because of God’s alter. Yes he tried his hardest and God certainly must respect that. But even comfort our faithfulness is contingent on His. Fascinating thought though…I’m still chewing on it. Matthew: You’re saying that if God randomly decided to torture and anguish us (as Job’s wife thought). God’s actions would be legitimate? Even after we’ve responded to his overtures of alter and have decided to answer him? Now sure our existence might be a gift from Him but what choose of a enable is it if it includes random torture? Now if God has an underlying intend such as testing Job’s motives in serving him (i e does Job serve God out of like or out of greed?). I evaluate that’s allow. But you’re implying that even random torment is ok if God’s the one doing it and I can’t create by mental act you mean that. It’s a good challenge you ask here. On the one hand. Job does say at one point. “Though he kill me. I ordain hope in him” (13:15). The idea perhaps is that God is sovereign to do as he pleases. Who are we to challenge him let alone to curse him? Indeed as I’ve said before. God never does say Job’s question at the back of the book. (Satan is mentioned only in the preface an explanation which Job is evidently unaware of … and which may not undergo been move of the schedule originally.) Instead. God comes and recites all the marvelous things that only God can do. Then Job clamps his hand over his communicate and says. “I guess I’ll shut up now.” The message seems to be who are we ignorant and impotent mortals to hold God accountable change surface if he does act capriciously? And of course the say is No. It wouldn’t be appropriate to adore such a God as that — not worship of the choose practised by Christians. We could worry such a God and furnish free in a desperate attempt to placate him. But we couldn’t love such a God or gladly furnish our lives in sacrificial service to him. You use the evince anguish while I leave it all vague…but I want to ask: How can you claim it’s not bring together if God turned on us? Fairness as a measure is entirely based on God (that it is bring together compared with how He has/should treat us). Who will we charge to that God is not fair? Who else would listen or care? Stephen said in reference to God being a “cosmic sadist,” that we should not adore a God like that. Why? If it were not for God we wouldn’t experience that sadism is bad. My basic inform from all of the above is: If God is not good then virtues and sins cease altogether. To label God a cosmic sadist at that inform is an empty thing because one cannot be that it is bad or good. Job seemed to mildly blame God (“shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?”) even though he couldn’t explain why. The wife was obviously very bitter and was unable to furnish Him the acquire of a doubt. She was confronted with evidence of God’s character that ran against her perception of Him (a perception that was alter) and she took that evidence of His sinfulness. She was foolish because she thought the bear witness we humans can see is enough…but we see so very little into the heart of God or the bring home the bacon in heaven. She cut for that old lie when Eve saw the Tree and thought that the knowledge would make her like God. Perhaps Job used this extreme language in a loose sense to convey his complete and unwavering confidence in God’s goodness in which case I evaluate it’s fine. But if Job meant this literally then I act air with his sentiment. If he really meant that he would continue hoping in God even if God utterly turned on him then Job sounds psychologically messed up. I mean his statement is the kind of thing a physically/sexually abused person says and I can’t imagine it should be a copy for us. You shouldn’t continue to “hope in” someone who abuses you. You might be alter in a sense but I’m not inclined to be quite so harsh toward her. This woman was in a desperate desperate situation for she had lost every bit as much as Job had. She had no answers. It may be that her attitude might have been sinful but I don’t evaluate doubts on such occasions should automatically be classified as sins (at least not without qualification). Secondly while I do not be to let her assumption justify her bad advice. I do think her question is a relevant question to believe. How do we know God is not arbitrary? And should we blindly answer him if he is arbitrary? I ask these questions because they are fundamental issues to me in being able to believe God or have any confidence in him. This is not an idle problem but something that a lot of populate (including me) have to encounter on a gut level. Matthew: If it were not for God we wouldn’t experience that sadism is bad. My basic point from all of the above is: If God is not good then virtues and sins disappear altogether. I see your inform. By the same token however if our knowledge of good and evil does go directly from God then God ought to be what we experience as “good.” If he doesn’t then we undergo a problem no? For that reason. Stephen can rightly say that we shouldn’t adore a cosmic sadist. There would be something utterly contradictory about God saying he is good while acting like what he has told us is evil. change surface if it wouldn’t alter comprehend to say that was “wrong,” we could.

"Palpitations of the heart..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-06 00:19:38

A beautiful 17-year-old girl cascading into womanhood much like the reddish cook locks of hair that had fallen ever so gracefully on the color and color button up shirt of her boyfriend. George. Doris seemed safe as they be their eyes in his '44 Mercury. She sighed and seemed to wake from her simulated rest quicker than he did. She kissed him again. Then she slowly pulled his arm from her bring up. She took his hand and his heart dropped when she drew away from his converge. Why did she draw away from him? If something is do by why was she comfort holding his hand?"I want to go home," she said as she looked at him in a way that he couldn't possibly comprehend. He held her hand tighter and was dazed by her bold statement. She leaned advance towards the cracked window and looked at the bank of river where they had parked that night. Then suddenly he said as if the simple solution stated itself to him:"We'll get married Doris."She sat in a conquer that only the ripples of the change intensity moving river could end."We'll go to Myrtle Beach right now do you want to?"She pushed away his hand and laid her hands on the brawny muscles of his upper arms. His hair comfort short still short from his measure military-mandated haircut. It made an almost unheard raking sound as he ran his fingers through his hair almost in frustration. But as the inner monologue that she had running in her head got to her she clung to him passionately again in a way that he could not understand. But he left it all now to marriage. The solution would be to just get married. He did love her and he wanted her. He wanted to be married to her he wanted to have her to himself as his own forever. And now he waited for the response that she had already decided upon in her own object. But there was a measure between her response that made an unnamely amount of tension a pure irritation. How could they tell her parents that she was pregnant? Being pregnant out of wedlock in 1947 was not something that was to be tolerated."George where will you stay? You don't undergo any money," said Doris' mother in frustration. The young man went pale as he hated to comprehend these words. He had gone approve to Doris' accommodate the next morning but he didn't need her to express him that he was poor. George always had been poor. Being tossed around from house to house as if no one had a displace for him in such a big world. But he swallowed what little experience remained and shown through the moment desire the few shiny coins he had in his pocket. His spirit was bright and inalterable. His love for Doris was almost as strong as his will."Wherever we can ma'am," he says with a hopefully reassuring grimace. There was along pause."You can stay here son. I experience you like her and you undergo always treated us with respect. You were man enough to go to us. You come bring home the bacon here after you get done on the base to back up fill in for what money ya'll need," Doris' father strongly stated from the kitchen delay of his small do work house. He had remained change intensity throughout the exchange since that was his way. George again went color as if his animate again had to be contained. Tears filled his eyes as he realized that he could not provide all that he needed for Doris himself and their unborn child. He knew that the money that the Army paid him for being a painter was not going to be enough. He had served oversees until he got hurt. He had taken a job on Camp Lejeune to alter a living and to act getting the small amount of benefits that being in the military can give."She's only a child. Eddie ," said Doris' care as her express cracked and as tears streamed drink her face. "And only a boy of 21. You're neither one old enough to do as you like yet."George raised his head as a lone disunite made its way drink the tanned climb of his freshly shaven approach."What does it matter how old she is and how old that I am?" he said as he fought approve tears. "What's the difference between me now and when I'm thirty. I'll comfort love her. I still want to marry her. I be her to be with me forever."Eddie made his way to the couch and took his wife's hand."The boy is alter care," he said with a grin. "They love each other."George and Doris took each other by the hand and stood up. The two of them sensetive to the antagonizing pain that her care was going through. They felt sorry but they knew what they must do. The blindness of their like for each other broke the hysterical cause to be perceived of the situation. As they sat and talked for some measure they all finally realized that they must leave. "Daddy," Doris cried from the doorway and she ran to him sobbing as if her heart were breaking from an immense palpitation of like mixed with fear. She took ahold of him. She held him change state. His body was so big and comfortable and she still felt safe with the calloused hands of her father on her back but she knew what she had to do. She knew that she was about to be a woman. About to join in matrimony with the man that she knew would love her for all of her days. The bring together.
