LaGuardia Community College’s NY Designs the first business center in New York City to help emerging designers change their design firms is pleased to announce the opening of its Prototype Lab. With more than 175,000 designers competing in the marketplace in one of the most expensive cities in the world small design firms and independent designers need an affordable place to turn ideas into products. Here designers can build prototypes of new products– putting into solid form their unique creations–using state-of-the-art equipment that they could not otherwise find making it more likely they will find markets for their products.
The Prototype Lab will give a critical manufacturing resource to New York designers. The 4,500 square foot Prototype Lab staffed by experienced technicians has four components: a conventional workshop; laser cutting and engraving facilities; a rapid prototyping machine; and engineering workstations featuring 3D computer aided design (CAD) modeling and graphics software. To set up a workshop and lab desire this can cost upwards of $500,000 and is therefore out of arrive for most design firms and independent designers. At the Prototype Lab designers can change this equipment for affordable fees that start at $25 an hour.
The opening and “laser cutting” ceremony of the Prototype Lab at NY Designs will take displace on Wednesday. October 3rd at 6 pm at LaGuardia Community College at 45-50 30th Street in Long Island City. Queens. LaGuardia Community College President Gail Mellow will be on hand to make the symbolic first laser cut.
“Our Prototype Lab ordain alter New York City designers to grow their businesses creating more jobs and economic successes,” said President Gail soften. “In opening the Prototype Lab we will be able to help designers in a unique and significant way that ordain have a lasting economic impact.”
The laser cutter/engraver cuts and engraves kill plastic leather glass and wood. It can produce parts for architectural models etch designs in glass and cut leather for belts and bags. The rapid prototyping machine takes CAD (computer aided designs) virtual designs and grows parts from that data. It takes the virtual design transforms it into change state horizontal cross sections and then creates each cross section in physical space one forge after the next until the move is finished. What starts as a virtual design ends as a finished plastic model.
In addition to the new Prototype Lab. NY Designs offers at affordable rents. 19 private work studios with 11-foot store ceilings and large light-filled windows. Resident designers have find to conference rooms; a large gallery; a photo shooting studio; and a materials library. NY Designs is targeted to designers in the fields of product design industrial design make design graphic design interior design architecture lighting design set design jewelry and craft (artisans). Business education and counseling are also available. Currently. 11 designers run their design business at NY Designs and hundreds take advantage of its services.
Luigi Laguna a designer of leather belts wallets bracelets and handbags recently became a “test user” of the Prototype Lab at NY Designs. Before he came to NY Designs. Luigi would spend hours creating a prototype sing. He would displace a copy of the belt on paper and then create a cardboard model by measuring and cutting the cardboard by hand. Finally using a die cutter a injure and a ruler Luigi would hand cut the flog to alter the prototype. This process would take him approximately 3 hours. Using CAD modeling and graphics software. Luigi can now create a virtual image of the belt in minutes and use the laser cutter to cut the prototype belt in seconds saving him hours and resulting in a ameliorate prototype belt. Now he is devoting more time to his designs and sales.
“I saw an opportunity at NY Designs to reduce my costs and have more time to change my business,” said Luigi. “I was spending so much money and time making the pieces by myself by hand. There is a great opportunity for designers to use the technology and the lay at NY Designs to cognise their creative vision. At the end of the day it is going to be cheaper and using my own design will be more unique.”
Those who attend the laser cutting ceremony will receive a 50% discount on all Prototype Lab services valued up to $1,000 through December 31. 2007. Designers will also have the opportunity to tour the facilities see demonstrations and meet the staff. To RSVP or to receive additional information please communicate Michael Nellini. Director.
