Segundo Pereira (2000) para os seus primeiros defensores o futebol poderia ser caracterizado como "o grande elemento de regeneração nacional" (p.211). Tais argumentos iam de encontro às teorias eugênicas que tomavam corpo no país naquele momento. Em contrapartida não foram poucas as reações contrárias à crescente e rápida popularização do futebol no país. Manifestações que partiam dos mais diversos cantos do Brasil. Da distante cidade de Palmeira dos Índios estado de Alagoas o ainda pouco conhecido escritor Graciliano Ramos em artigo publicado no ano de 1921 mostrava toda a sua revolta contra a "invasão" do esporte inglês em terras brasileiras especialmente no Nordeste20. Segundo ele o futebol jamais se tornaria popular em terras nordestinas pelos seguintes motivos: ".. somos em geral franzinos mirrados fraquinhos de uma pobreza de músculos lastimável. (...) fisicamente falando somos uma verdadeira miséria. Moles bambos murchos tristes - uma lástima! O texto acima ao pintar um quadro tão negativo a respeito do brasileiro revela um claro complexo de inferioridade da nossa classe intelectual em relação a outras nações. EnquantoCoelho Neto via na prática desportiva uma forma de nos aproximarmos do nível dos povos mais adiantados. Ramos tinha um ponto de vista contrário com o futebol servindo como mais uma prova da superioridade européia em relação ao nosso "lastimável" povo. Mal sabiam eles que algumas décadas depois este mesmo esporte que segundo o próprio Graciliano Ramos previra seria apenas fogo-de-palha uma moda passageira viria a tornar o nosso país respeitado em todo o planeta inclusive na Inglaterra. Entretanto ninguém fez uma campanha tão feroz contrária ao futebol do que o escritor Lima Barreto que classificava o futebol como um fator de dissensão. Sua aversão era tamanha que o levou a comandar a criação em 1919 de uma "Liga Contra o Foot-ball" na qual alardeava os malefícios trazidos pela prática do jogo da bola (pernas quebradas brigas mortes etc) 22. Segundo a interpretação de Pereira o ódio de Lima Barreto teria a sua origem em seekões sociais e raciais. Os grandes clubes para ele seriam dirigidos pelos descendentes dos antigos senhores de escravos. O caráter elitista dessas agremiações reforçaria ainda mais a distinção social no país. Vale lembrar que naquela época o acesso dos futebolistas negros aos grandes clubes ainda era bastante restrito culminando com o pedido formal por parte do governo brasileiro para que estes atletas não fossem levados para representar a Seleção Brasileira no Campeonato Sul-Americano a ser disputado na Argentina em 192123 (SUSSEKIND. 1996 p.17). A popularização do futebol entre a classe trabalhadora nas primeiras décadas do século passado foi vista com extrema desconfiança pelas lideranças sindicais da época formadas principalmente por militantes anarquistas e comunistas que viam na prática futebolística assim como na dança e no carnaval formas de alienação patrocinadas pelos donos das fábricas com o objetivo de desviar o foco de atenção do proletariado em relação à causa operária. O uso do futebol como estratégia de manipulação da massa trabalhadora elaborada pelos patrões e a passividade do operariado nacional especialmente do carioca eram veementemente criticados por anarquistas e comunistas provenientes na sua maioria do continente europeu dotados de uma consciência de classe totalmente diferente daquela do proletariado local24. Existe uma relação direta entre o pensamento desses grupos com o de Lima Barreto que via no futebol um grande elemento de perpetuação do domínio exercido no passado pelos senhores de escravos figura essa agora substituída pela dos donos das fábricas. Entretanto a partir do final da década de 1910 houve uma mudança de posição especialmente dos anarquistas em relação ao futebol25. Ao perceberem que ao incentivar a prática esportiva poderiam também atrair para as suas reuniões os aficionados do jogo da bola tornaram-se comuns os eventos que tendo como objetivo principal a divulgação da doutrina libertária utilizavam como chamariz partidas de futebol entre times operários como foi o caso do festival promovido na Quinta da Boa Vista26 em 1919 (Foto 3). Compete ressaltar que a Foto mostrada reflete exatamente a intenção dos promotores do encontro. Vale reparar que nela os jogadores dos dois times estão misturados ao público com o claro intuito de simbolizar a igualdade entre todos os componentes do operariado carioca. A estratégia sindicalista é assim descrita por Pereira:Mostrando-se capaz de construir entre os trabalhadores da cidade uma sólida articulação o futebol era utilizado por sindicalistas e militantes libertários como forma de aproximar ostrabalhadores pouco afeitos às discussões políticas de seu movimento transformando-se assim em seu aliado potencial na tarefa de formar no operariado carioca a consciência quedesejavam (p.275). Tal estratégia no entanto não surtiu o efeito desejado pois o que a classe proletária realmente queria era utilizar o futebol como um meio de distração pouco interessando a ela a addressão da causa operária. O que os anarquistas e comunistas fizeram na verdade foi tentar assim como os próprios patrões utilizar o futebol como um veículo para disciplinar e controlar o operariado. Com a crescente proletarização do futebol não tardou para que aqueles atletas de maior destaque conseguissem dentro do próprio ambiente de trabalho uma série de regalias anteriormente inimagináveis originando a formação de uma "elite operária do futebol" Caldas (1994) assunto sobre o qual falaremos no seguinte item. O operário-jogador: a elite proletária do futebolA popularização do futebol no ambiente fabril trouxe consigo uma modificação nas relações entre patrões e empregados. Os donos das fábricas logo perceberam que o sucesso das equipes que levavam o nome das empresas27 servia como um excelente veículo de divulgação e popularização do nome das fábricas e de seus produtos28.
